The book, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, is a collaboration of the adventures of a thirteen your old boy, Huck. Within all of Huck’s adventures he is struggling with society. Huck is also dealing with his father coming back after being missing for a year. Huck goes with his father, leaving Widow Douglas, his care taker, returning to his old carefree way of life. Huck likes returning to the uncivilized ways, but doesn’t like being locked up by is father. He fakes his death, running off on his own. Huck runs into Widow Douglas’s sister’s slave and decides to travel with him.

I liked how Mark Twain touched on the quarrels Huck faced in society. I didn’t like all the different adventures Huck had because it doesn’t seem very practical for a thirteen year old boy to be running off on his own when he has a place to go with Widow Douglas.

What can we learn from reading this book?

I think that we can learn that there is always good in everyone by Huck not telling on Jim, and instead befriending him, despite what society told him.

Answers to Essential Questions:
What role does society play in shaping who we are?
I think society plays a huge role in shaping who everyone is. It affects people no matter what, whether they like it or not. It affects what people do on a daily basis, what they wear, what they say, maybe how much they eat or exercise. Say someone doesn’t think someone else is thin enough and they make fun of them for it, this effecting the way that person feels about them self, shaping part of who they are.
What does freedom mean to you?
Freedom to me means being able to do the things I wish without being stopped or judged because of it. It means having the choice to wear what I want, say what I want, eat what I want, go wear I want, etcetera.
How do you go about making important decisions?
I go about making important decisions by taking time out and thinking through my options carefully. I would identify weather that decision would be the best thing for me, and the other people who would be affected by that decision.
What does Huck Finn teach us about what it means to be human?
Huck teaches us that by being human, we are all faced with what society is telling us. He shows the different conflicts in the decisions we have to make.
